The Dallas Museum of Art
To begin let’s start with the basics. The Dallas Museum of art is an art museum that’s located in downtown Dallas. The museum has a collection of over 24,000 objects from as early as a third millennium BC. In 1903 the Dallas art association was created and that was the spark that initiated the artistry collective in Dallas.
There are several notable pieces of artwork located here. Oedipus at Colonus by Girout, Ballet Dancers on the Stage by Edgar Degas, and Water Lillies by Monet to name a few. The types of art featured range from African to Asian and contemporary to pre-Colombian.
One of the appeals of the Dallas Museum of Art is that it is free admission and they offer a free membership program. every Thursday there are live jazz concerts with dinner and drinks in the café. And once a month the museum is open till midnight hosting readings film screenings and performances.
There have been exhibitions that have been stationed here throughout the past decade. In 2019 Christian Dior was showcased with successors Yves Saint Laurent and there were 200 couture dresses, accessories, and runway videos on display.
Perot Museum of Nature and Science
The Perot Museum of Nature and Science is another traditional museum that science buffs will enjoy most. The museum was opened in 1936 as part of the Texas Centennial Exhibition. This museum features several museums inside. There is a children’s museum, a sports museum with displays featuring the Dallas Cowboys, and there’s even a section called Expanding Universe which re-creates the Big Bang.
The design of the building is one of the most notable features of the museum. It has also received 4 Green Globes from the Green Building Initiative.
National Videogame Museum
For a museum that is a bit off the beaten path, check out the National Video Game Museum. This museum opened in 2016 and it includes classic video game arcade machines, different video game consoles, memorabilia from the video game industry, and learning stations that showcase the evolution of video games.
This museum is not located within Texas however it is well worth the trip to Frisco. If you’re really into video games, check out the artifacts they have under lock and key there. The museum is home to the only known prototype of the unreleased Sega Neptune. And that isn’t just the only special edition consoles you can see.
Black Girl Magic Museum
One of the newest museums in the area is the Black Girl Magic Museum. This interactive submersion into the culture and community of black women is truly one of a kind. There are over 10 exhibits with backgrounds and props so you can take photos. All while learning about the importance and history of black women around the world.
If you have a little one and you’re hoping to educate them on something that is not going to be taught in their school books, this is the perfect place for that. The ultimate goal of this museum is to be a pop-up event so it will be moving from Dallas to another city at some point.
Mary Kay Museum
Lastly, on our list of museums, we’re going to look at another one that is a bit out of the box. If you don’t know what or who Mary Kay is, you may be too young. But all of us older folks know who Mary K is and she has a museum.
The museum features a timeline of the success of Mary Kay Inc. There is a section for her rewards and recognition, a section that displays the company’s beginnings, a section for Mary Kay’s gowns, a section of pink collector items, and Mary Kay’s personal photos.
Sometimes visiting a museum that may not sound like your vibe can be purely beneficial just for the experience. This is merely a short list of the museums that are located in and around Dallas. The best way to learn about the money museums of Dallas is to take a trip and see for yourself.
